The name Škoda Superb builds on a tradition established before the Second World War. Several models were produced, ranging from the 640, built from 1934 to 1939, this was the first car to be used by high-ranking military officials. In 1936, 2 new trim levels were added, with increased horsepower. Some German officials, however, were not satisfied with the car's relatively low top speed, and slow acceleration; so Škoda met these demands with a new model range, in which the engines included the OHV (over head valve) system to increase power output. The "OHV" model had a shorter frame by over 500mm, which somewhat decreased rear comfort, however also allowed much better performance and handling. Near the end of the Second World War, Škoda created one last model, the 4000, the rarest and most luxurious of all original Superbs. This model was extended in length to 5700mm, about the same as the current (2010-) Rolls Royce Ghost. It is also the only Škoda production car ever to feature an 8-cylinder engine
